Hey everyone! I’m a New Jersey Family & Maternity photographer, and I absolutely love capturing the beauty of pregnancy. As a pregnant mama, you may be stressing and worrying about not knowing what to wear for your New Jersey maternity photos. Don’t worry! Here are five tips that can help you pick out the perfect dress!

Maternity Photo Dress Tip # 1

Color matters!

When scheduling your maternity photoshoot, make sure you double check with your photographer what colors look best with his/her editing style. That matters! I have a very warm/golden editing style so specific colors look better than others with this style. I always provide my pregnant mamas with a color palette to choose from. Your best bet is to go with something neutral in tone like white, tan, black, or even deep red. Stay away from bright colors like green, orange, purple, etc. Also, choose a dress that is solid in color without patterns!

Maternity Photo Dress Tip # 2

Pick a dress that is long in length.

Longer dresses just look more flattering on pregnant mamas. It’s also fun to get some photos of the dress blowing or flowing behind you. Dresses with a small train in the back are great options and make the blowing affect so much easier to capture.

Choose dresses that are easy to slip on and off!

A lot of my pregnant mamas choose to do outfit changes during their sessions and that’s totally okay! In fact, I encourage soon to be mamas to capture different looks. Heck, you don’t even have to purchase two dresses. Some mamas choose to do a few photos in a tank top and jeans; and then slip into a dress later in the maternity session.

Don’t spend a tremendous amount of money!

Please don’t spend an arm and a leg on your maternity dress or outfits. Only because you will probably only be wearing it one time. Unless you plan on wearing it again for another photo session. Another reason is that I love capturing my maternity mamas in the water! That is if the session is held in the summer, and we are at a location where there is water. I absolutely love the look of pregnant mamas in the water. It adds such a dramatic feel to the photos. So if your dress is getting wet; I’d recommend not buying something super expensive.

Choose comfort over beauty!

This is your maternity photo shoot, and I want you to feel and look comfortable. I know pregnancy itself is uncomfortable especially when you are in your last trimester. That’s why I encourage you to choose dresses that are light weight and fit comfortably around your baby bump. Don’t choose anything too tight because that will just leave you feeling uncomfortable, and that discomfort will show in your images.
