Hey mama! Are you expecting a baby soon? Or maybe, you already had your baby. Either way, I’m so glad that you are here. I’m Danielle, a New Jersey newborn photographer. The number question I get asked all the time is “What outfit should my baby wear for their newborn photoshoot?” That’s why I created this blog post. I hope you enjoy these 5 tips on planning the perfect newborn photoshoot outfit.
As a New Jersey newborn photographer, I always tell my mamas to choose a neutral tone color palette when planning their baby’s newborn outfit. Neutral tones include white, beige, tan, or brown. I know these colors may seem boring, but these colors photograph really well. You don’t want to put your baby in anything too bright or too dark because that will mess with your baby’s natural complexion. You also don’t want any outfits that will cause a distraction such as bright, flashy patterns. This is an example of an adorable photoshoot outfit that I bring along to all of my newborn sessions.
There’s something so adorable about knitted baby outfits. I feel that they offer a different texture and an overall different look than your every day cotton outfits. You can find some really adorable ones on etsy or from Hank knitwear. I bring this baby sweater to all my newborn photoshoots.
I’ve been a New Jersey newborn photographer for quite a few years. Over the years, I’ve learned that babies like to be nice and warm during their photoshoot. So swaddling the baby is a great choice as well. There’s nothing more comfy than a warm and snuggly swaddle or wrap. In fact, when babies are fussing a lot, putting them in a swaddle blanket will usually calm them and help them go to sleep. Don’t worry if you don’t have fancy swaddle blankets or newborn wraps. Any neutral color receiving blanket will do. These are the ones I bring along to my newborn sessions.
Okay so this tip is more geared for the baby girl; but you can get fun and creative accessories for baby boys too. Newborn hats or suspenders look really adorable on baby boys. This outfit from etsy is so incredibly cute. In my opinion, I feel that you can’t do a newborn photoshoot without some cute fancy headbands or bows. These are the ones I bring along to my newborn sessions.
If you are looking for a more natural and organic look to your photos, then taking pictures of the baby in just their diaper is okay too. Some clients prefer raw and completely candid photos of their baby; and if that is the look you are going for, go for it! Remember, this is your photoshoot just as much as it’s the baby’s. Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion and tell your photographer before the session begins what you are looking to capture.
So that’s it! I really hope these 5 newborn outfit tips have helped you! If you are interested in booking a New Jersey newborn photographer, you can contact me here. I’d love to connect with you on social media as well.

My name is Danielle. I started Danielle Stio Photography in 2021. There is something about being an entrepreneur that really motivates me. This is more than a hobby for me. It is a passion and a calling.
I started this business at a very dark time in my life. I was searching for meaning and purpose and I found that through photography. My hope is that I can put a smile on my clients faces not only during their session , but after their session; and especially when their gallery is delivered.

"Working with her from booking up to when we took our photos was a breeze. She helped me pick out outfits for the family and was so responsive and kind when I was reaching out with questions or needing suggestions. I was so nervous now that our oldest is 17 months and doesn’t know how to sit still but she was so patient with us and completely understood when our toddler kept running away from the camera. Even with all the chaos I felt she was able to calm my anxiety and she got such beautiful photos."

"I found Danielle on a Facebook group over the summer and signed up to be notified for her fall shoots. She was very responsive, easy to work with, and we couldn’t be happier with the final product - we love all the photos. She turned the photos around so quickly too. We’re so happy we chose Danielle to take our family photos this year and will definitely be using her in the future! Thanks again! 😊."

"My husband, 9 month old, and I took family photos for the first with Danielle and I cannot say enough good things about our experience! Before we even took the photos she sent so many helpful documents with outfit suggestions and tips for taking pictures with babies! Then when we arrived she was so sweet and did an incredible job making us feel comfortable in front of the camera! Between directing us on how to pose, to making my daughter smile! She was so patient with us and really made sure that we got every shot we wanted!."
