Well, the answer to that question really relies on the client and what season they prefer. If you are on the fence about family photos and aren’t sure which season is better to book in; this blog post will help you make that decision.
I’m Danielle! I’m a New Jersey family photographer who specializes in lifestyle family portraits. I photograph families in all seasons, but I have to say that both summer and fall are my favorite seasons to photograph in. I really don’t prefer one over the other. Both seasons have advantages and disadvantages. Keep reading to get a better idea of which season is right for you and your family.
Since I’m a New Jersey family photographer, I have the luxury of photographing family along the white sandy beaches of the Jersey Shore. I know not every photographer has this luxury, but even if you aren’t by the coast, you can schedule your summer photos by a lake or another large body of water. I know that you can photograph by the water during any season, but the summer just makes it extra special. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be by the water during the colder months. Who wants to walk barefoot on a beach on a cold, crisp fall evening?
Fall photos can be iffy with weather. You can get cool refreshing weather or you can get downright cold and windy weather (especially in the late Fall.) With summer photos, you are guaranteed to have a warm night for photos. The only downside to that is summer intends to get stormy so sometimes those warm, muggy nights might produce a strong thunderstorm!
I’m a sucker for sunsets and the summer months have some of the best sunsets around. There’s something about a sunset (especially over the water) in the summer that just makes the sky extra beautiful. I have photographed sunsets in Fall and while they are beautiful, they don’t compare to the summer.
I’m obsessed with the colors in the Fall! Nothing beats family photos with the fall foliage in the background. Also, during the fall everything is less green which makes a really nice balance of color in your images. Sometimes, in the summer; photos can be overpowered by the green which sometimes doesn’t always look the best in images.
If you like the temperature to not be too hot or not cold, then Fall photos are for you. I know summer can get a bit hot, especially in New Jersey so you may want to avoid extreme temperatures and book your session in the fall. Personally, I find October to be the perfect time because the temperatures hover around the comfortable 60’s and 70’s!
This may be a good thing if you have young children that go to bed early. I schedule all of my sessions at golden hour (one hour before sunset.) This can be late in the summer months which is hard on families with young children. I completely get it. I’ve been there! So I always tell my parents with young children to book in the Fall because the sun sets earlier (especially in November.)
So there you have it! There are advantages and disadvantages to both seasons, but whichever season you choose; your photos will be gorgeous!

EXPLORE SERVICES
My name is Danielle. I started Danielle Stio Photography in 2021. There is something about being an entrepreneur that really motivates me. This is more than a hobby for me. It is a passion and a calling.
I started this business at a very dark time in my life. I was searching for meaning and purpose and I found that through photography. My hope is that I can put a smile on my clients faces not only during their session , but after their session; and especially when their gallery is delivered.

"Working with her from booking up to when we took our photos was a breeze. She helped me pick out outfits for the family and was so responsive and kind when I was reaching out with questions or needing suggestions. I was so nervous now that our oldest is 17 months and doesn’t know how to sit still but she was so patient with us and completely understood when our toddler kept running away from the camera. Even with all the chaos I felt she was able to calm my anxiety and she got such beautiful photos."

"I found Danielle on a Facebook group over the summer and signed up to be notified for her fall shoots. She was very responsive, easy to work with, and we couldn’t be happier with the final product - we love all the photos. She turned the photos around so quickly too. We’re so happy we chose Danielle to take our family photos this year and will definitely be using her in the future! Thanks again! 😊."

"My husband, 9 month old, and I took family photos for the first with Danielle and I cannot say enough good things about our experience! Before we even took the photos she sent so many helpful documents with outfit suggestions and tips for taking pictures with babies! Then when we arrived she was so sweet and did an incredible job making us feel comfortable in front of the camera! Between directing us on how to pose, to making my daughter smile! She was so patient with us and really made sure that we got every shot we wanted!."
